Birdotanais songkhlaensis found in Songkhla Lagoon

DSCF2647Prof. Dr. Saowapa Angsupanich from the Department of Aquatic Science, Faculty of Natural Resources, Prince of Songkla University, established a new genus Birdotanais, based on the new species B. songkhlaensis collected from brackish Songkhla Lagoon. It is a kind of crustacean estimated to be about 2 mm long and is usually found in the sediment of lower Songkhla Lagoon at 0.7 m. depth, 30/1000 salinity.

Prof. Dr. Saowapa said that "Birdotanais songkhlaensis belongs to the phylum Arthropoda in the subphylum Crustacea of the family Nototanaidae of the order Tanaidacea. Its species was named 'songkhlaensis' according to its origin, Songkhla Lagoon. Additionally, its genus name, Birdotanais, honors Dr. Graham Bird, a specialist in tanaids (order Tanaidacea). This study was published in The Raffles Bulletin of Zoology Vol. 60: 421-432."
